The world of computers and connections live so fast, that techniques learned today are old tomorrow. There are both in use in Svalbard 2005 expedition. PANASONIC Toughbook CF-18
Toughbooks CF-18s are sheltered, portable computers. CF-18 is designed so, that it keeps dust, moisture and cold with condensed Magnesium-structure. It is very tough but in the same time light. Extreme cold of Svalbard is kept out with hard-drive warmer. Connections: RS-232, USB and Bluetooth. Using solar panel and loading box attached to the panel load electronics. The contents of the box are: lead acid gel battery, needed connectors with fuses and charge adjuster made by Nelcom Oy. Normal charge adjustors work with batteries adjusted to big solar panel system (for example 100 Ah). There are limits made to these adjustors for these normal situations. Our 2,3 Ah battery is not able to accept electric current coming from this system. Fortunately Nelcomp Oy made adjustor for our customized needs. MC MURDO Plb satellite emergency transmitter
Satellite emergency transmitter, PLB (Personal Location Beacon) is obligatory equipment when traveling in Svalbard. Svalbard governor, Sysselman requires, that expedition has this device with it. In emergency one activates the device and it start to transmit emergency signal in 406 Mhz density. This signal goes via satellites to nearest rescue centre. Device also gives another signal at 121.5 Mhz that works as a beacon for rescue forces coming to help. We hope that this device will not be used in our expedition. MOTOROLA 9500 Satellite phone
We chose phone that uses Iridium network. Compared to other vendor Inmarsatthe range of usage is wider, the phone is smaller and lighter and device and prices of phone calls are cheaper, about 2 /minute. The main usage of this phone is to update our web-pages. It is also a backup in emergency situations. Other
