Equipment - Food
Diet of arctic expeditions consist mainly of one component, energy, but other values of food cannot be forgotten either. To get 5000 kcal / 20 000 kjoul energy from his food one needs to carry about 1,2 kg of dehydrated food with him. To get same amount of energy from normal food one needs to eat 36 portions of porridge or to drink 11 liters of milk. To get our needed amount of water we have to melt about 700 liters of snow. NATURE`S BEST Perfect Energy Powder
Nature's Best Perfect Energy Powder is used in Svalbard 2005 expedition as an extra source of nourishment during the skiing day as well as a source of vitamins and micronutrients. If compared to normal sports drink powder, this product dissolves to the water easily and contains also other things than sole carbohydrates. Perfect Energy Powder still contains as much energy (400 kcal/100g) than normal powders. MINIGRIP bagsMinigrip bags are very usable for us. Most of the food and clothes will be packed to different size Minigrip bags. After packing, air is forced out of the bag and then it is waterproof, durable and compact package. If needed, one can use Minigrip bags for washing. It is done by pouring water into the bag and dipping a washing glove into it. Then you just wash yourself with the glove. Measurement of energy consumptionWe will collect some medical information during the expedition. The weight of every one of us will be measured before and after the expedition. Everyone will also write down his food and liquids. Comsumption of energy is measured with pulse-meter. Different feelíngs are written down, too. Results will be delivered to Lic. Med. Heikki Karinen, who has researched this area a lot.
